LUBBOCK: PANHANDLE MUSIC MECCA

The largest city in northwest Texas, Lubbock (pop. 199,564) is a busy and unattractive agricultural center, best known for having given the world Buddy Holly, whose songs (“Peggy Sue,” “That’ll Be The Day,” “Rave On”) paved the way for rock ’n’ roll. Music fans make the trip downtown to pay homage at the statue of Buddy at the corner of 8th Street and Avenue Q, and learn about his life in the Texas Musicians Hall of Fame (Tues.–Sat. 10 am–5 pm; $5; 806/767-2686), which also details the lives and times of other Lubbock boys and girls made good, including Roy Orbison, Waylon Jennings, Tanya Tucker, and Joe Ely. Buddy Holly, who died in a 1959 plane crash at age 22, is buried near the entrance of Lubbock Cemetery, at the east end of 31st Street.
