The last California town before the Colorado River, Winterhaven is the modest center of the Quechan community on 44,000-acre Fort Yuma Indian Reservation. A few reminders of its pre- and post-colonial past are displayed inside the small Fort Yuma Indian Museum (Mon.–Fri. 7 am–noon, 1–4 pm; $1) alongside the white-walled St. Thomas missionary church. Both structures overlook the Colorado River from atop Indian Hill off the end of 1st Street. From the church, you can walk across a historic bridge to Yuma, Arizona (see below).
