Across the Chattahoochee River from Georgia, Phenix City, apart from being oddly spelled, is interesting for being the site of Fort Mitchell National Cemetery—the “Arlington of the South,” holding the graves of soldiers from the Civil War to Operation Desert Storm. Before the cemetery was established, this is where thousands of native Creek Indians were rounded up in 1836 before being sent west on the notorious Trail of Tears to Indian Territory in Oklahoma.
