A dozen miles east of Ashtabula, just west of the Pennsylvania border, the historic port town of Conneaut (pop. 13,200; KAH-nee-ut) has an art director’s dream of a great road-food restaurant, the White Turkey Drive-Inn (440/593-2209), on US-20 at 388 E. Main Road. Owned and run by the Tuttle family since 1952, this place is famous for two things: turkey sandwiches and root beer floats. Between Mother’s Day and Labor Day, sit outside under the red canopy on a warm summer evening watching the fireflies, and everything’s guaranteed to feel right with the world. Conneaut also supports two great breakfast and lunch places: Johnson’s Drive-In and the turquoise-green State Street Diner, facing each other across US-20 downtown.
