WEST DANVILLE

West Danville, a summer community 20 lovely miles east of Plainfield on the edge of Joe’s Pond, is ringed by rustic vacation cabins. The pond, which at sunset in summer is one of the more idyllic spots imaginable, was originally called Indian Joe’s Pond, which explains the presence of Indian Joe Court, a set of roadside cabins dating from the pre–politically correct era. At the junction of US-2 and Route 15 in the center of town, you’ll see a micro-sized covered bridge and the Hastings Store (802/684-3630), the local “if we ain’t got it, you don’t need it” emporium, selling cheddar cheese, maple syrup, fishing supplies, and other Vermont essentials.

At the hilltop cabins of Indian Joe Court ($45 and up; 802/684-3430), guests can borrow pedalboats or canoes from a 300-foot beach and hang out on the water. You can also stay at the one- or two-bedroom cabins of Point Comfort ($55–65; 802/684-3379). Both establishments have weekly rates if you’re lucky enough to linger here a while. Indian Joe has a few RV sites, too.
