The Great Northern Route

Crossing the broad Connecticut River, which forms Vermont’s 200-mi-long (320-km) border with New Hampshire, US-2 makes a short but scenic run across the state. From the historic commercial center of Lancaster, just east of the state border, US-2 winds along the wide valley of the Israel River before reaching Jefferson, home to one of the state’s biggest tourist traps.

Continuing east, US-2 curves around the northern flank of towering Mt. Washington and the rugged White Mountains, an area rich in outdoor recreation and scenic splendor. At Gorham, US-2 reaches the valley of the Androscoggin River, which it follows east into Maine.
