The only sizeable town between St. Ignace and Escanaba, Manistique (pop. 3,583) tends to underwhelm, apart from its Lake Michigan frontage. Mountains of gravel and mini-smokestacks line the road into town on the east side, and the sweetly pungent smell of paper permeates the air. Despite that, Manistique does have an offbeat sleepy tourist draw: old US-2 (now Hwy-94) crosses the Siphon Bridge, which was featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not! for being partially supported by water, and having a roadway four feet below the water level.
