SALMON

Surrounded by ranch lands in a broad valley between the Bitterroot and Yellowjacket Mountains, Salmon (pop. 3,122) is a picturesque place that has turned increasingly to tourism and outdoor recreation as its timber and ranching industries have faded. Not surprisingly, it makes a better base from which to explore the surrounding scenery than it does a destination in itself. Main Street, which US-93 follows through town, holds a good variety of places to eat, including the Salmon River Coffee Shop (208/756-3521) at 606 Main Street, and Bertram’s Brewery (208/756-3391) at 101 S. Andrews. Just off US-93, the quiet Motel DeLuxe ($40–60; 208/756-2231) at 112 S. Church Street offers inexpensive rooms. Rafting, hunting, and fishing guides are all over; the visitors center (208/756-2100 or 800/727-2540), next to City Hall at 200 Main Street, has complete lists.
