One of the more offbeat corners of the state, the town and county of Floyd, south of Roanoke, shelters a small pocket of the 1960s that’s apparent in subtle but distinct signs. Earthships (houses made of recycled materials and earth), gasohol, and tie-dyed T-shirts in crafts stores all reflect a counterculture legacy that combines and contrasts intriguingly with the surrounding rural lifestyle. There’s only one stoplight in the town of Floyd itself, which makes it easy to find the Floyd General Store ($3; 540/745-4563), which is famous for its weekly Flatfoot Jamboree: every Friday at 7 pm, the display cases are pushed aside and the floor given over to real country music and shuffling feet.
