Located at the intersection of US-340 and US-522, eight miles southeast of Winchester near the hamlet of White Post, Dinosaur Land (daily; $5; 540/869-2222) displays an entertaining and marvelously kitschy collection of manmade sharks, cavemen and, of course, dinosaurs. It’s especially fun for kids, who are welcome to climb on and around the concrete menagerie, and wry-humored adults will enjoy searching through the very large gift shop, which has all manner of cheesy souvenirs.
White Post, by the way, got its name from—you guessed it—a white post, placed here by a young surveyor named George Washington. The post marked the road to the country estate of Lord Fairfax, which was destroyed in 1858.
