MILFORD

At the west end of US-6’s very pleasant run along the river from Port Jervis, just off I-84 at the northern end of Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Milford (pop. 1,400) is a cute little town cashing in on the hordes of rafters, campers, and B&Bers who make the weekend journey to the surrounding Pocono Mountains from New York or Philadelphia. Drive slowly when passing through Milford’s deceptively peaceful central business district, because the local police maintain carefully concealed speed traps that result in heavy fines for even the most minor speed limit violation.

Milford was the longtime home of forestry pioneer and two-term Pennsylvania Governor Gifford Pinchot, whose Grey Towers estate off US-6 is often open for tours ($5; 570/296-9630).

The unsurpassed people-watching perch is the front porch of the historic Tom Quick Inn (rooms $80 and up; 570/296-6514), which serves lamb chops and prime rib dinners in the heart of downtown Milford at 411 Broad Street. Less-expensive rooms are available at the Blue Spruce Motel motor court ($50–75, 570/491-4969) on the northeastern outskirts of town on US-6 at the US-209 junction.
